The Nazareth College Student who pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the second degree after she caused a fatal crash will serve the remainder of her six month sentence in the Monroe County Jail. That was the ruling in court Wednesday for Danielle Pitcher.

Pitcher admitted she was driving drunk that night in January 2011 when she struck another car head on. The crash killed her friend and fellow Nazareth classmate Gabrielle Acevedo.

Pitcher pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter. She was sentenced to six months in jail, but the Acevedo family wanted Pitcher to finish school. Pitcher was allowed to continue attending college at Nazareth, and served weekends in jail until graduation.

She just graduated, so she will now finish out the sentence, minus time served during weekends up to this point. That equals about two and half more months in jail, plus five years probation.

"She’s not heartbroken by having to go to jail today; she is heartbroken by the loss of Gabby Acevedo. Why do we have to wait so long to learn these lessons; why do these accidents have to happen first?" questioned Pitcher’s attorney, Ed Fiandach.

"The Acevedo family was in constant contact with us and as I said before it was very difficult for them to do what they did. We were actually lobbying for this sentence and the Acevedo family did not want her to go to jail as well," said Perry Duckles, prosecutor.

Pitcher's attorney said she graduated Saturday and plans to return to Syracuse after she is released. She wants to then speak to high school kids about the consequences of drunk driving.
