The New York State Department of Transportation sold off nine properties at an auction Wednesday.

The DOT says it often auctions off excess land and it has no use to the department.

A spokesperson says the DOT often acquired property during road construction projects, and when the work is done, the land is deemed surplus.

The sale included land in Monroe, Ontario, and Livingston County.

"We are very pleased with the turnout today and we had some bidding competition on many of our parcels so we were very happy with the turnout and our results," said Mary Beth Bell, DOT real estate officer.

The DOT says Wednesday's sale totaled about $259,000.
