With North Rose-Wolcott votes 'yes' to change to the "K-6-7-12" model, what does that mean for the future of education here?

For one, the plan has the potential to save as much as $13 million in the budget over the next decade, by closing one or two school buildings. They could build a brand new K-6 elementary.

It might not be the cheapest plan for the future, but the superintendent believes it could be the best plan, long-term.

"A brand-new building would get 30, completely, 30 to 40 new years out of it," said John Walker, superintendent.

"If you build a brand-new, super colossal building that has all the technology involved, you're still hoping to have that teacher, who's in that classroom, give a good education to those children. It doesn't matter that the floors are brand new, and the ceilings are, you know, great," said John Boogaard, board of education member.

No matter what, it looks like any new plan will close one of the school's current buildings: either Leavenworth Middle School, or the North-Rose Wolcott Elementary School.

Any eventual plan must go to a board vote, then a vote of the taxpayers here. It's expected to be at least until next fall before any of that happens.
