The Genesee ARC still has a fighting chance. That's the opinion of the organization's director after the Batavia City Council voted no to a resolution that would have officially ended the city's contract with ARC for trash and recycling service. But that doesn't mean ARC is out of the woods just yet.

The crowd was very excited that the vote was no to the new system, but most of this crowd supported the ARC, and this vote is not good news for the ARC.

"Our contract ends March 31st, and I guess we'll be waiting to hear from the city; if they would like us to assist, or they may have their own ideas. It doesn't necessarily put us back in the picture. It kind of puts us in a little state of limbo," said Donna Saskowski, ARC executive director.

The Council has now directed the City Manager here to try and get the city out of the trash business entirely, and let every resident contract their own garbage provider. It's a system with more freedom, but the ARC believes it would be a mess too – trucks from all sorts of companies up and down city streets all week long.

The ARC is still willing to sit down and negotiate a new system with the City of Batavia, because the contract ends on March 31st. Once that date comes, most if not all of their disabled employees could be out of a job.
