Effie Henry says she found out her neighbor was killed when the police came to her door.
Effie has lived in a house on Hazelwood Terrace since the 1970s; many of those years, next door to Eddy, as she called her. She says they all looked out for each other.
"If she didn't get home in time and I'd get suspicious, I'd call her," Henry said. "It's hard to talk about because me and her, we're close. We stayed in contact with one another about what was going on in the neighborhood."
Police in Rochester believe Edline was shot and killed during a robbery. Her car was stolen. Police won't say where she was killed, but say it did not happen in Tryon Park, where a maintenance worker found her body Wednesday.
Police say they do have a person of interest in custody in connection to Edline's death.
"She appears to be an outstanding citizen that happened to be target and this was the result," said Chief James Sheppard of the Rochester Police Department.
Edline Chun was an adjunct professor at RIT's College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. She taught there for almost 20 years.
A statement from the school said, in part:
"Her colleagues in the School of Media Sciences describe her as someone who ‘always went above and beyond to serve the students and the school with passion, integrity and the utmost class.’ We extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends."
Neighbor Jerry Sullivan says Edline was involved with her Beechwood Neighborhood Coalition. He said he almost couldn't believe it when he heard her name on the news.
"She was a quiet person, a beautiful person. This strikes at the very core of my heart and all of us in this neighborhood. To have a woman like this murdered is just beyond belief," Sullivan said.
Police expect to release more details about what happened to Edline in the coming days when charges are filed. They are still asking any friends, family members or neighbors who have any information to come forward.
