A man arrested for driving while intoxicated early Sunday morning got behind the wheel again and crashed his car on his way home three hours later.

Genesee County Sheriff's deputies pulled over Jeffrey Hamill, 34, for speeding in the Town of Pembroke around 1:45 a.m. Sunday.

Deputies said Hamill was drunk and they charged him with speeding and driving while intoxicated.

Instead of calling for a ride home, Corfu firefighters say Hamill called someone to follow him home. On his way home, Hamill spun off the road on Route 238 in the Town of Darien around 4:45 a.m. and crashed into a tree. The person who was following him called 911.

"Apparently somebody came to meet him, and instead of that person taking him home that person drove their own vehicle and saw him go off the road," said Brian Schollard, Assistant Corfu Fire Chief. "Five in the morning, it's very frustrating for something like that that's one hundred percent preventable."

Firefighters say Hamill was conscious when they got there, but not alert. He was taken to Strong Hospital by Mercy Flight with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.

Additional charges are pending.
