Rochester Students Honored for Reading

The Rochester City School District honored students for reading during their holiday break.
The RocRead program rewarded kids at School 15, School 50 and Rochester International Academy.
The district says more than 8,000 students read books during the last school vacation. It's a new record that's part of RocRead's initiative to engage students and their parents in reading.
RocRead's success means the program is expanding.
The Levine Foundation and Rochester Education Foundation provided a $50,000 grant to RocRead to purchase more books.
"Encouraging our children to read during the school break is extremely important, so we are so happy that thousands and thousands of children are reading when they are not in school. If we are going to be successful in educating our children, we need to encourage them to read in school, in the community and at home and this is what RocRead is all about," said Bolgen Vargas, Rochester City School District Superintendent.
Each student who successfully participated in the reading challenge received two free meal coupons from Wegmans and two RazorSharks tickets.
