Questions continue to surround the recently signed NY Safe Act. Gun owners and local law enforcement agencies are looking for answers.
Tuesday, a team made up of members of the New York State Police and Division of Criminal Justice Services tried to clear up some of the confusion around the gun control law.
Former Monroe County District Attorney Mike Green, who now works for the Division of Criminal Justice, says with any law there is still room for interpretation.
"Interpretation depends on police officers who have the power to make arrests or not make arrests, who make decisions. If there is an arrest, the case goes to court and District Attorneys decide if they're going to prosecute and if so, how. And even if they prosecute, judges make decisions about what the phrasing in the law actually means," Green said.
Some gun owners say despite what was said at the meeting, they are still upset about aspects of the law and the entire process.
"They did it in the dark of night behind closed curtains, and I'm just afraid we're headed in a really bad direction in America," said Andrea Phillips.
The SAFE Act is at the center of a lawsuit. The State Rifle and Pistol Association filed the first legal challenge to the law on Tuesday, stating portions of the Act are unconstitutional.
