Some students spent the day-off from school helping others in the community to honor Martin Luther King Day.

The Avenue D Community Center hosted a number of volunteer events for kids. Students met up at the center and talked about what Dr. King did for civil rights. They even had a trivia contest and rewarded kids for the right answers.

Volunteers then went to two senior-citizen facilities to help out there. The kids mingled with the seniors and played games.

Students also organized a neighborhood clean up and peace rally.

"Martin Luther King; he touched a lot of people lives younger and older and his legacy is still on, so it is nice for the younger generation to be with the older generation today," said Ruby Melendez.

"A lot of these senior citizens do not go out so they bring the youth here so they enjoy themselves and have a little game playing and bingo playing and sharing with one another," said Luis Tolentino.

The kids ended the day with a pizza party and bingo with the seniors.
