Firefighters were called to a vacant house fire on Salt Road in Penfield around 5:30 Monday morning.

The Penfield Fire Department says a couple out walking their dog saw smoke coming from the house and called 911. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the back of the house. Once inside they saw the fire had started in the basement.

The homeowner was very upset. He said they had recently moved out and were preparing the house for sale.

Firefighters smashed windows and cut open the roof to put the fire out.

"It's a big house, there was a big fire in there. The back of the house, the siding is all burned out, the windows were burned out from the fire. It vented itself before, right as we were getting here," said Jeff Withall of the Penfield Fire Department. "Water was not an issue actually, the bulk of the fire was put out from the rear of the structure as well as in through the garage. The large, very large hole in the floor really prevented us from making an aggressive interior attack."

The fire department said that one firefighter did fall into that large hole into the basement. Emergency crews were able to get him out say he was not injured and is doing fine.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
