The city of Rochester is training its first class of firefighter recruits in two years.

Twenty-four city residents are part of the Fire Academy Class of 2012. More than 900 people applied and twenty four were selected.

This is the first academy since March 2010. Budgets and downsizing put a freeze on any new hires.

The city says this is the most diverse class. This is also the first class to undergo EMT training during the academy.

"It was a little bit of a stressful situation, just hoping and praying that everything would work out. Now, with this process, it's going to be a lot of camraderie and making sure we keep the team together and everyone gets through; no one left behind," said Marcus Patterson, a recruit.

The recruits began training last month. They are expected to graduate in May.
