A new bus pass system is in effect for students in the city of Rochester. RTS has changed its student bus pass rules in response to increasing violence downtown.

Students with express bus passes previously had the option of taking the regular bus lines downtown in the morning. Students will now only be able to take the Express Line straight to school.

These changes are the result of collaborations between RTS, the Rochester Police Department, and the Rochester City School District. Their effort is an attempt to reduce the number of incidents that have been occurring downtown before school.

"The results so far have been remarkable. The numbers of students in the downtown area, in particularly in the morning, the morning is where we were having the major issue, has been reduced significantly by 80-85 percent and by extension has reduced the number of incidents that are happening downtown," said Jerome Underwood, Senior Director of Operations, RCSD.

The changes were aimed at increasing the safety of both the students and the community.

Students who wish to take other bus routes must pay the $1 RTS fare.
