A local American Legion post's bar has run dry and will close because of lack of payroll funds just before Veterans Day.
The Ira Jacobson 474 post in Charlotte will stay open for functions and meetings, but its bar will be shut down.
We confirmed the news with Post Commander John Cubit. He said the move will leave all five of the post's part time employees without a job.
Cubit told us that he tried to collect emergency funds from the post's 200 members but only 12 of them made a donation.
He said that the bar operates from its own sales and not from member dues.
"It's just like losing a family. That's all," said Rosemary Porter, Charlotte Resident.
"We just can't afford to be here anymore,” said Tracy Sciortino, Bar Manager. "The overhead the REG alone kills us, so it's just not favorable anymore for us to be here."
Cubit says he is looking for volunteers to tend to the bar. But until he finds them, it'll remain closed.
