Several groups partnered up Saturday morning to beautify Rochester's Josana neighborhood.

Saturday morning flower gardens, benches, and signs were added to the areas of Jay and Broad streets and Smith and Broad streets.

Local volunteers worked with members of Flower City Habitat, the Charles Settlement House, and the Northwest Quadrant Neighborhood Service Center to clean up several neighborhood gateways.

Organizers say they wanted to turn the overgrown vacant plots into a welcoming meeting place for visitors.

"I think that one of the issues you face is that a lot of people just drive by the neighborhood, and there's a lot of stereotypes about what these neighborhoods are like. And I think what this does, it says this is a pleasant place to be. It's a place that is just like my neighborhood basically," said Arthur Woodward, Flower City Habitat Executive Director.

More than 50 volunteers participated in the cleanup project, including students from Webster Thomas High School and Nazareth College.
