ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Unity Health System's Healthy Start Program held its first ever clothing drive. The donated items will be given to women and children participating in the Project Independence Program at the Genesee Street Campus.

Cars rolled in for most of the afternoon dropping off things like clothes, toys, household goods. Healthy Start and Project Independence helps pregnant teens and mothers with life skills like parenting advice and job training. Many of the women in the program are able to work towards a high school diploma.

"There is a huge need in our community. A lot of our women do not have the resources to be able to buy clothing for their children. Low income families, so we provide all of those services. These donations are stored in our Children's Closet, and all of the community and our participants get to shop in their for free," said Melisa Vazquez Nichols, Unity Healthy Start Program.

Unity plans to hold two more clothing drives this fall. Unity Health Systems has 70 locations in Monroe County.
