Churchville-Chili School Board Votes on Cell Phone Use
The Churchville-Chili School Board voted Tuesday night to allow students in grades seven through twelve to use cell phones for both instructional and non-instructional purposes.
Those students will also be allowed to use smartphones, laptops, netbooks, Kindles, Nooks, and iPads for a book which was previously downloaded.
A "stoplight" system will be used for use of cell phones and other digital devices.
It will be a teacher's discretion as to when digital devices may be used during instructional experiences.
The board banned the use of cell phones during school hours for fifth and sixth graders in the district. However, those students will be allowed to use their phones before and after school.
The district is now deciding what it should do about students and their smartphones. The district says it already has policies in place for social media and acceptable use of technology.
