The Town of Greece has co-sponsored the Spirit of America Fourth of July celebration since 2002. Last year, organizers had to cancel the event at the last minute. This year, the community came together to ensure the celebration would continue for years to come.

“We watched the fireworks on TV instead of watching them explode over our heads, unfortunately,” said Jim Gray, volunteer.

Event director Brenda Green says it costs well over $30,000 to run this event in Greece every year. This year, they started planning in early spring.

“In March, April Fool's Day, we had over 200 people commit and sign up and say we are never going to let this happen in our community again,” Green said.

Event coordinators decided to charge for parking to offset some of the costs; however, the event is free with most concessions costing around a dollar. Some who attended say the location provides parents with a safer alternative to the fireworks show in the city.

“It's nicer here, you get a nice family atmosphere here... you bring about twenty bucks and everyone can eat and have a great time," said Harry King.

“Greece in itself is a very large community; it's a city, it's the size of the city, having our own firework display, as we have had in the past for many years, we're very happy to have it," said John Auberger, Town Supervisor.

Now back on their feet, and mostly funded by sponsors, anonymous donations, and church-run fundraisers, organizers aim to one day make this the biggest fireworks display in Monroe County.
