McCaffrey is trying to become the first elected Democratic District Attorney in Livingston County in more than 100 years. He was appointed interim DA by Governor Andrew Cuomo on May 18th to serve out the remainder of the term vacated by longtime prosecutor Tom Moran, who last year was elected State Supreme Court Justice.

McCaffrey believes voters will look beyond party affiliation when they go to the polls in November.

"I'm the District Attorney, not a Republican, a Democrat or Conservative or independent District Attorney. I will represent everybody. Hopefully just getting out, matching my qualifications and showing everyone over the next four months that I'm doing a fantastic job, making great strides in the office and everyone's safe,” McCaffrey said.

McCaffrey says he's running on experience. Prior to being appointed District Attorney, he spent six years as a criminal defense attorney in Geneseo, and before that he worked five years with the Monroe County District Attorney's office prosecuting felony cases.

McCaffrey says public safety is his number one goal. He believes his time as an Assistant DA in Monroe County makes him the best candidate.

"I was first assigned to the felony DWI bureau where current District Attorney Sandra Doorley was my immediate bureau chief. We handled a plethora of vehicle assaults, driving while intoxicated and vehicle related offenses. From there, I proceeded on to the county court bureau, where we prosecuted non-violent felonies, quite a few burglary offenses, which are one of the more common charges we have here in Livingston County. And my last year and a half, I spent exclusively in gun bureau prosecuting shootings, stabbings, the most violent criminals in Monroe County."

Two Republicans are also vying for the post. Former Acting District Attorney Eric Schiener said in a statement:

"As the endorsed Republican candidate for Livingston County District Attorney, I welcome the news today that the appointed interim District Attorney has entered the race. The choice for the voters of Livingston County is clear and I look forward to a spirited campaign in the days and months ahead."

"I'm not surprised by Greg McCaffrey's announcement of his candidacy. My military background gives me the leadership and qualities necessary to run the office. As a Marine Corps prosecutor in the early 1990s, I was securing convictions for violent felons before the other candidates in this race had even graduated from college."
