'Pawn Breakers' Alleged Leaders in Court
Jury selection began Monday morning for two people charged in a multi-million dollar criminal enterprise that targeted several local stores.
The District Attorney's office says Ersin Yaman and Ismael Cruz were leaders of a group that enlisted six other people to use stolen credit cards to purchase or steal items at stores across the Rochester area between December 2008 and September 2010.
Authorities believe the operation could have involved up to $15 million in stolen property. The items then went through local pawn shops, or were used in homes that Cruz and Yaman own.
Investigators seized several homes, vehicles, multiple bank accounts, and nearly three quarters of a million dollars in cash as part of "Operation Pawn Breakers."
If Yaman and Cruz are convicted of the felony enterprise corruption charge, they face a sentence ranging from one to 25 years in prison.
