For the third day in a row, local workers were informed they're being laid off. Tuesday, it was Kodak, Wednesday Xerox, and Thursday it was Cryovac Sealed Air Corporation.

The 180 people who work at the food packaging plant on Brooks Avenue learned that the plant will gradually shut down and they'll each lose their job.

Employees, who did not want to be identified, say they were called into a mandatory 7:30 a.m. meeting and each handed a letter that said the facility would be closing on May 10, 2012.

The employees said some people have worked there for 25 years.

According to Sealed Air's website, the company is a global leader in food safety and security, facility hygiene and product protection. Employees tell YNN they produce food packaging for meats and poultry at the Brooks Avenue location.

Sealed Air's director of corporate communications said the Rochester facility has been part of the company’s global strategic review. In a written statement Sealed Air said:

"This was an extremely difficult decision... The Company considered a number of criteria - including operating costs, strategic location, proximity to other facilities and levels of technology - and it was determined we can best serve our global manufacturing strategy from other locations."
Employees said Sealed Air offered them an opportunity to apply for other jobs within the company, out-of-state.

County Executive Maggie Brooks said she's hoping that won't be necessary.

"Certainly, when we hear a downsizing announcement, we feel pain for the families and the individuals affected, because that impacts our quality of life, but overall, we are still able to withstand these announcements better than any other community in the state, I believe and I think that will continue," said Brooks.

Brooks said for every company YNN could name that announced layoffs this week, she could name a small to midsized business that's adding jobs, like the national title and escrow company Closing USA, which announced Wednesday it would add 100 jobs over the next year.

Employees said the local Sealed Air plant shut down for a couple days so employees could digest what they'd learned.
