A local basketball coach and former star athlete has been charged with raping a student.

The Gates Police Department arrested Monte Nowden on Monday. The 38-year-old, who was the boys varsity basketball coach and a teacher aide, is accused of having sex with a girl under the age of 17 on January 30th.

Nowden was fired by the Gates-Chili School District Monday night, ending a long and celebrated association between Nowden and the district.

Gates-Chili Coach Charged With Rape
Monte Nowden is one the most successful athletes in Gates-Chili school history. A college football standout, Nowden returned to his alma mater and was in his second year as the boys varsity basketball when he was arrested, charged with rape, and terminated by the district.

Nowden graduated from Gates-Chili in 1991. A standout in basketball and football, he went to the University of Connecticut, where he was a two-time all-conference wide receiver and safety for the Huskies. Nowden was inducted into the Section V Hall of Fame in 2010.

Last year, the in-school suspension supervisor was named boys varsity basketball coach.

Monday, he was arrested and charged with third degree rape. He's accused of having sex with a female student under the age of 17. Police say the alleged incident occurred on January 30th outside of school hours and off-campus.
