Daylight saving time begins Sunday a.m.

U.S. -- We'll have one more hour of daylight to enjoy in the evening starting Sunday. Daylight saving time occurs at 2 a.m. Sunday so most of us will have one less hour of sleep tonight.

Daylight saving was instituted in the United States during World War I to save energy for war production by taking advantage of the later hours of daylight between April and October.

Clocks fall back when standard time returns on November 7.

And, the Rochester Fire Department would like to remind everyone to also check your smoke detector batteries Saturday night, and replace them if necessary. Working smoke detectors save lives and reduce the chance of injuries or fatalities in a home fire.
