BP: As Smart as a Football Player

I scored a 15, which loosely projects to a 37, although to be fair I may have taken liberties with the time allowed. So the test clearly fails to measure the ability to fill out an expense report or properly install a windshield wiper.

BP: The Bills Need Clausen

The Bills need someone to put on the cover of their program. They need an identity. They need someone for their most loyal and tolerant fans in the league to care about.

BP: Some Common Ground at the Games

Upon concluding the games, Vancouver Olympic organizer John Furlong stated, "I believe Canadians tonight are stronger, more united, more in love with our country and more connected to each other than ever before." The same can be said about the United States I think.

Spring Without Stan

Stan Cliburn remembers the date. September 21st. The day Minnesota Director of Minor League operations Jim Rantz told him his contract to manage the Rochester Red Wings would not be renewed. Five months later, Cliburn still hasn't found another baseball job.

BP: Making a Lasting Olympic Impression

Hubertus Von Hohenloe, Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong and Marjan Kalhor will become part of the backdrop for the stories from Vancouver more closely tied to triumphs and medal counts. But we may remember them longer.

BP: A Super Slice of Life

All in all it was a great night. We like the Super Bowl, because as all the breaks in the action clearly demonstrate, we are often a disturbingly simple society.

BP: Faces of Devotion

Something about Kurt Warner makes us a little uncomfortable. It's the Bible he carries with him. Maybe it shouldn't. Maybe it should.

BP: The Cost of Caring About the Bills

Unfortunately for the sake of accountability, only one question really matters to the fans of the Buffalo Bills and what's worse, the football team knows it. "Will that be cash or credit?"

BP: Time Well Spent

Nothing lasts forever, especially the good times. That's why it is so important to celebrate them. It brings me to Boston. It took Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio from Boston to Florida eight years ago.

01/19/2010 09:58 PM

BP: Buffalo is Still Special

There are only 32 National Football League head coaching jobs out there. Yet it seems the Buffalo Bills have to beg someone to take theirs. Why is this?

BP: The Age of Success

If Buddy Nix succeeds in putting Buffalo back on the NFL map, it'll be an unprecedented event. It makes his head coaching hire even more important. It's his best chance to be remembered for something other than his age.

BP: Searching for Brian Brohm

You couldn't help but remember. You couldn't help but hope that the old Brian Brohm still existed, could be resurrected and that the Bills would be rewarded for this stroke of genius and somehow stumble into a solution to their most pressing personnel need, a quarterback.

BP: The Season for Giving back

Children are such a necessary part of the holidays because they remind us of a time when everything was good about life. The farther down that path you go, the more you realize it just isn't so. When bad things occur between Thanksgiving and New Years, they stick with you.

BP: A Collective Accomplishment

The book was a Christmas gift to myself. It's about a whole lot of things you might not otherwise think about. Important things like false masculinity, acting responsibly and enacting justice on behalf of others. About a football coach who, when asked what kind of season he expected to have, answered, "We won't know for another twenty years."

Woods Affirms Three Idioms

Everyone who wanted one had their say and took their shots at Tiger Woods and all that occurred since an otherwise quiet Thanksgiving. It was an interesting morality play that provided affirmation of three old idioms.

BP: Flicking Matches at the Man

On Monday, Terrell Owens pleaded his case on Sporting News Radio claiming he was being picked on by the Buffalo media. Frankly he is, and if he were anyone else, he'd have been cut some slack.

09/30/2009 09:25 PM

BP: When the Tailgate is the Game

Much like the football team itself, a weeks worth of planning, preparation and execution is invested into the outcome of a game; the bounce of a football or a blocked punt. When Penn State loses, like it did to Iowa Saturday, the people who invested the most take it the hardest.

BP: Harwell's Last Hacks

Ernie Harwell is dying of cancer. At age 91 he decided against surgery; says he's ready for the "next adventure." Harwell is taking his last hacks.

A Tribute to Barry

He's the guy who demonstrated to me that it is perfectly acceptable to take money from your kids in a card game. So it was the perfect tribute; a poker tournament; the first annual Barry Richardson Run. Ten of us got together to honor the man a year after his death.

09/16/2009 07:47 PM

BP: The Fifth Tight End

The question was asked of DeVree whether his background as a Patriot might benefit his new team, which opens at New England on September 14. DeVree smiled. If he's being used by the Buffalo Bills he doesn't appear to mind.

BP: As Time Goes By

They were the first team in the NFL to hit the practice field. They were first team to play a preseason game. They had a full extra week to get ready to play. Now with just one game standing between Buffalo and its season opener, it feels almost like the time was wasted.

08/31/2009 11:55 PM

BP: Teddy's Football Fantasy

History will adequately demonstrate that we were all better served by Kennedy's choice instead to attend law school and enter politics. But you can't help but wonder what would have happened had the senator played football instead.

08/27/2009 11:14 PM

BP: Picking Winners in February

Knowing only what Major League Baseball teams pay their players, you could correctly pick all four of the American League playoff teams, six of the eight overall, along with four of the six teams in last place, without watching a game, before the season began.

08/25/2009 08:56 PM

BP: The Football Foundation of What Came Before

Mr. Wilson's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame was a long overdue honor and especially apropot in the fifth AFL's fiftieth anniversary celebration.

08/17/2009 08:01 PM

BP: Penfield and the 24 Hour Rule

John Kelleher, who was part of a Section 5 championship team in Hornell in 1981, coached the Penfield 11 year old All Stars this summer. He tells his players, "Don't forget it's a game. If you don't have fun, we've all failed."
