ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Wednesday was an off day for the Bills as the second week of organized team activities rolls along. The team is back at it Thursday and Friday to round out the week.
During OTAs, the Bills have been working on some two-back sets, in order to maximize the production from Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller.
Both players posted career numbers last season. Jackson averaged five-and-a-half yards per carry, and was on pace to come close to 1,600 yards when he went down with a leg injury.
In his absence, Spiller put up five yards a carry, finishing with 564 yards. Now, their production and versatility are giving Chan Gailey options.
“The great thing about it is we can put both of them anywhere. We can leave one of them in the backfield and put the other one out as a receiver or motion them out. They both can block well enough that they create problems for the defense,” said head coach Chan Gailey.
“CJ and I are joking with each other when we go in what position we’re at. I’m trying to confuse him and he’s trying to confuse me. The more we get used to doing it the better we’ll get at doing it. Hopefully it’ll be something we can use as a tool throughout the season,” said Jackson.

The Bills defense looks significantly different than it did a year ago, coming out of the lockout. New defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt said his staff has been focused on bringing in players with character on and off the field.
Their first free agent signing came last summer, when Nick Barnett agreed to join the squad. He led the team with 130 total tackles.
Now add Mario Williams and Mark Anderson and Barnett was just the tip of iceberg as far as adding free agent talent of defense.
“When you look at teams like I did, when I came, you see potential. You don’t want to go to a losing team. I don’t care how much they pay you. You want to have the potential to be a winning team,” Barnett said
You’ve got guys like Shawne (Merriman) when I came and (Chris) Kelsay, and Kyle (Williams), and Dwan (Edwards) and Marcell (Dareus) coming in. You’re like, okay I’ve got a good front that can be here for years and years and years. You start to say, okay if I can stay here with them then we can get a Super Bowl.”
