"Well, we're fast approaching the time when there's no turning back," said Abby Wambach.
No turning back at all. The opening ceremonies are just about two months away, and Wambach is hard at work with her American teammates preparing for a chance to take the next step after coming so close in the World Cup.
"There are some people who are made for World events, and I think maybe I was one of those people that loves the buildup, loves the grind. The few months before any world event, all my friends can attest, I get a little obsessive about eating right, keeping my body in perfect shape, and doing all the little things that make me the best forward for my team that can help us bring home gold," she said.
The United States National Team is preparing for a pre-Olympic tune-up against China on May 27th in Chester, Pennsylvania. Part of that preparation is a 10 day training camp here in Princeton, New Jersey; a camp in which players have assigned a high value.
"This is the best time in an athlete's life. You're putting everything in focus, doing everything you possibly can to give your team the best chance to bring home gold. Every little thing matters and every little thing counts," said Wambach.
And the time to make it count is approaching. Following Sunday's friendly, Team USA has one more camp in Salt Lake City - before heading off to Europe.
