This week on Your Home, we're talking housing trends. From architectural styles to floor plans, what is trending right now for builders? Peter Belmonte has been building homes for over 30 years and in that time he's seen the average home change shape significantly.
"Back in the seventies, contemporaries were quite popular. The market is totally different. Contemporaries have faded into the sunset. Colonials have become much more intricate and the architecture has become much more vast," said Peter Belmonte, custom home builder.
As the market for new home construction has trended towards less square footage, more single floor homes are being built.
"First floor master bedrooms have taken on a very high level of popularity. But even more, it's all one story homes. The ranch style home from the sixties, where everything was on one floor, had very much gone out of sequence. People weren't asking for it. In the last decade, it's become increasingly more popular. We actually build communities exclusive to first floor master and all one-story construction," explained Belmonte.
When it comes to floor plans, the open flow concept is king. Long gone are the days of walls. Homes with a proper living room and a proper dining room are a thing of the past.
"The old colonnade or compartmentalized room concept have passed. They're really gone. People want the family room to flow directly into the kitchen. No long is one person in the kitchen preparing a meal, isolated from what's going on in the center of the home. They want to be a part of that. It also gives the feel of a larger home in homes that may be more modest in size," said Belmonte.
Belmonte continued by saying that kitchens have become a focal point in new homes, acting as a sort of showcase. People often take the money they save on less square footage and popular their kitchens with high end amenities.
