In as little as two days, Rochester-area plastic surgeons say they will begin to offer a new type of breast implant that has just been approved by the FDA.
It's called the "Natrelle 4-10," but it's nickname is "the gummy bear implant." The name comes from the firm gel interior of the implant, which mimics the solid texture of a gummy bear candy.
"In a standard implant like this, the gel is viscous, and if it were cut, it would ooze out slowly. But the gummy bear implant, if it were cut in half, the implant gel would stay put," said Howard Langstein, M.D., URMC Plastic Surgery Chief.
The new implants appear more natural, and are available to women who need reconstructive surgery, as well as women who are seeking breast augmentation.
