Sugar Mountain Bake Shoppe has been in business for two years. A second location on Monroe Avenue in Brighton is now open.
It's a cupcake shop that longtime friends Riley Greider and Doni Brown created from their shared love for baking.
"We started as a part time gig. We just wanted a way to make extra money, and we started as a cookie company actually,” said Brown.
Then one day, Riley came across a blog on cupcakes and the decision was made to transition their part time cookie business into gourmet cupcakes.
"We started baking cupcakes kind of at home for friends, then we kind of graduated to selling them down at the Public Market, and it came time to decide whether we were going to continue or close up and we had to find a spot,” said Greider.
Riley and Doni then hooked up with the owner of La Tea Da Tea Room located at the corner of Alexander Street and Park Avenue and opened their first shop there.
They wanted to make their cupcakes different from others on the market. So each cake at Sugar Mountain Bake Shoppe contains a cream filling.
"We wanted to have three layers of flavor; the cake, an equal amount of filling , an equal amount of frosting, not one portion of the cake over powering the other. So all the flavors blend together in a perfect mix and it's kind of a nice explosion in your mouth of all the flavors," said Greider.
Sugar Mountain now features more than 100 varieties of cupcakes, each one unique in its own way. The menu also includes cupcakes that replicate popular cocktails, including their Christmas cappuccino.
"Our Christmas cappuccino is an eggnog cinnamon cupcake. It's filled with a Sambuca advocaat filling. We top it with a coffee butter cream and an eggnog whipped cream and that's actually a drink that you can get in a bar."
The menu changes weekly and new recipes are always in the works.
The shops are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monroe Avenue, and 5 p.m until 10 p.m. at the Alexander and Park location.
