NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Niagara Falls police say family members of Peter Daniels, 37, found him and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Wilson, 31, dead on the dining room floor of Wilson's home on 29th Street, just before 8 p.m. Monday.
According to detectives, Daniels made a brief stop at his parents' house where he also lived across the street before he returned to Wilson's house. His mother noticed he had blood on him.
"(She) was concerned about the way he was behaving. She called some family members. While she's doing this, she hears what sounds like a gunshot across the street," said Det. Lt. Michael Trane.
Autopsy reports show Daniels strangled Wilson, then slit her throat with what appeared to be a type of hunting knife; Daniels died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
While investigators continue to look for a motive, family members told them the couple was on-again, off-again for a couple of years.
"We have never had any calls to the Niagara Falls police regarding any domestic incidents between the two of them," said Trane.
Police tell us Daniels has one son, was in the Army Reserves, and had three previous arrests for minor incidents which happened more than 10 years ago.
Neighbors said he was also a bodybuilder.
Wilson was originally from Bath, Steuben County. She didn't have any family locally.
Neighbors who did not want to appear on camera told YNN the two kept to themselves. Another neighbor says he often heard the couple arguing.
"One of the neighbors after the fact did say they thought some of his behavior was weird and thought maybe he was stalking her," said Trane.
A medical examiner will perform toxicology tests on Daniels as part of the ongoing police investigation.
