Rochester police were called to the Genesee River Saturday morning for the report of a body in the river.

Police said a tugboat operator discovered the body floating in the river near Petten Street and River Street just after 7 a.m.

The Rochester Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard were called in to assist with recovery of the body. The Scuba Team was also called in but did not need to help as the body was floating on the surface of the water.

Police said the body appears to be that of a man. According to police, it is very decomposed and the identity has not yet been determined.

"It's very difficult for us to make a determination about who the individual may be. Based on some of the information I got from the technicians on the scene, it appears as though the person has been in the water for some time, which makes any sort of identification or gathering of physical description information very, very difficult for us," said Rochester Police Lieutenant Aaron Springer.

Springer said it will take at least a couple of days for the Medical Examiner to identify the body.
