Dan Smith

Dan Smith anchors YNN Rochester's morning news each weekday.

The Oakfield, Genesee County area native began his career at YNN in 1993 while still a student at SUNY Brockport. Dan rolled an internship into a full-time job behind the scenes as YNN's PM assignment editor. He quickly moved to field reporter, weekend anchor, and finally to the anchor position he holds today. Dan also serves as weekday morning supervisor and coordinates the YNN college internship program.

“I know from my own experience at YNN that there’s no more important experience for a student than an internship,” Dan said. “Students get opportunities they just can’t find in a classroom, a chance to network with those in the business, and a great resume builder for that first job.”

Before college and his career in television news, Dan served in the United States Air Force as a tail gunner on B-52 bombers.

The Radio and Television News Directors Association has honored Dan with its regional Edward R. Murrow award for writing.

Dan makes the most of the Rochester area’s fair weather months. He splits his time playing golf and softball, riding his Harley-Davidson, and cruising in his classic car.

“I guess you could pretty much call me a gearhead,” Dan said.

When the weather turns colder, you can find Dan playing steel-tip darts in the Genesee Valley Darts Association league.

Dan lives in the city of Rochester.
